Wifey and I finally got a date night and decided to give Crane and Pelican a try. It's a quaint place close to the River Drive strip in LeClaire, with views of the Mississippi. The restaurant is in the historic Dawley House, which was apparently built in 1851. There's local art for sale on the walls, which adds to the ambiance. We started the meal with the cranberry hummus platter, which sounded just weird enough to try. It was delicious. I ordered the pecan crusted salmon with blueberry compote, which was mouthwatering. It came with generous portions of mashed potatoes and broccoli. Wifey had the open faced roast beef on beer bread. The beef is from Sawyer Farms in Princeton, Iowa. Wifey loved it. This was one of those meals that your brain tells you to stop because you're full, but your mouth tells you to power through. We powered through and I followed it up with some house made limoncello. My only gripe is that the bread that came on the side of the plate was tough, which seemed like an aberration, given the otherwise splendid meal. The menu has so many items that sound good, I feel like I could go back again and again. I loved this place - the atmosphere, the food, the local ingredients and the views were all superb. What else can I say? Go there now.

This is my choice of where to eat when in Le Claire. The food is outstanding and the wait staff friendly and efficient Overall a very pleasant experience.

The restaurant is in a home built in the 1800's set atop a hill over looking the Mississippi River. The corn fritters are amazing, also had the open faced roast beef dinner which was just the right size and the bread that it is on was a type of beer bread which gives it a very unique taste. Would highly recommend to anyone looking for a nice quite dinner with amazing food and great views!

Beautiful setting for a meal in Le Claire. The food however is a hit or miss, half of our dishes were delicious and the other half looked right out of a hospital cafeteria (in a bad way in case you are actually a fan of hospital food). Came in for lunch and was wooed by the ribeye supper and portabella sandwich, and was heartbroken by the gyro sandwich and steak salad (meat had grilled marks but was gray, tasted and textured like it was steamed). More disappointing with the food was the service. It took about 40 minutes for appetizers to come out, and over an hour for our entrees to come out. When we followed up with our waitress, she started slamming our water glasses when refilling them and our plates as they came. The stress and tension from the lunch over shadowed any highlights from our food. Check out the Faithful Pilot instead, and ask for the back room for a view!

Worth a short trip from I-80 for the charming ambience and river views from the back room. Staff is friendly. Food was hit or miss. We had Thai Corn Fritters--better as an idea than actually executed. Meatloaf sandwich was a large slice and deliciously grilled, but somewhat salty. Horseradish mashed potatoes, were flavorful, but room temperature. Veggie pita was unremarkable but inoffensive. Adequate selection of wines and drinks.

What a neat little restaurant! Tucked off a main street in an old house, this restaurant oozes with charm. When you walk in, you feel like you're walking into someone's nicely restored century home. I started off my dining experience with a Mississippi Mule, an Iowa version of a Moscow Mule, which is a cocktail made with ginger beer, vodka, lime juice, and mint. For a tiny little cocktail it sure packed a punch! And the little tin cup it was served in added a nice touch. We had the hummus and date appetizers to start. The hummus was good but the dates? Holy awesomeness in my mouth! I don't care how much they cost! They were SO good! (and it's rare to find vegetarian friendly dates anywhere) Since I'd never seen an asparagus sandwich on a menu before, and it was vegetarian, I had to try it. The asparagus was fresh and flavorful and the bread tasted like it was freshly baked. It wasn't what I expected but it was really good! My coworker/dining companion had the pasta in a tomato vodka sauce - made with vodka from a local distillery. She could have licked her plate and said it was some of the vest vodka sauce she's ever had. Wish I hadn't been stuffed so I could have tried dessert. The carrot cake looked amazing. This is a must see if you're in the Davenport area! I hope to go back the next time I'm in town for business!

We love the ambiance of this unique restaurant! Visited a couple times now, and have yet to venture away from their meatloaf supper & smoked Gouda soup! It's just so delicious that its hard for us to try any of their other tasty options! The service has always been wonderful-and the owner even came out to ask how our meal was on our last visit. What I love about this place is that its what you make it. Sometimes we get all dolled up and enjoy a cocktail before our dinner and other times we just dine in our jeans and tennis shoes. Crane & Pelican offers great service, local drinks, & food -I highly recommend it!

The place to stop in Le Claire. This house was once owned by my wife's grandparents. Amanda, the owner, has done a wonderful job restoring its charm and adorning the walls with intriguing local art. Try and one of the meatloaf sandwiches or the chicken & dumpling soup. But DO NOT pass up the following appetizers: The stuffed dates, filled with an almond-cranberry-chevre paste and lightly roasted; The cantaloupe crepes, layered with prosciutto, melted brie and a balsamic vinegar reduction. Amanda, the libation expert, poured some hard-to-find Templeton rye whisky, Iowa's own. Area microbrews on tap, too. Great place for a light lunch or a hearty dinner.

LeClair itself is a pleasant surprise of a step-back-in-time riverboat town, and this restaurant fits right in. Housed in an old brick mansion just up the hill from the main drag, we expected to find boring meat and potatoes fare, but were surprised to find many delicious vegetarian and gluten free options to meet our family's complex dietary requirements. Have no fear, carnivores, lots of great looking options for you too. We enjoyed handmade veggie burger, asparagus sandwich, and special-made gluten free penne and cheese. Beautiful restaurant, super friendly, accommodating staff, tasty food. A little slow and prices were a little high for lunch, but the food is worth it. We will definitely return.

Cobb salad is amazing, fresh crispy and the perfect amount of every ingredient. We were just passing through and I ordered the salad to go, they had it ready in a couple minutes, but after seeing the interior i wish i had time to sit down and there! next time!

Driving up to this place it is adorable. Its an old house remade into a restaurant. But that is about all that was great. The food was ok, solid 3 stars, but nothing special. I got a California cobb salad. It was nothing special, anyone could have made it. We also ordered the Totes Ma Goats which was good, but again could have had more of either flavor or texture. Its a cute place for lunch, but nothing more. Servers were friendly, service was good.

Excellent lunch! The Welsh rarebit appetizer was outstanding as was the chicken and dumpling soup. Our entries: Cobb salad and the midshipman sandwiches were prepared to perfection including the made to order focaccia for the sandwich. I chose the goat cheese smashed potatoes as a side and would recommend them every time! Great food in a beautiful location with top notch service!

Wow!!! What a great atmosphere, service and ultimately the food. Highly recommended. My girlfriend and I have the hummus plate and "totes da goates" (tomato caprese) for starters. Fresh and clean and wonderful. I had meatloaf for entree and was totally worth it. I'm not even that big of a meat eater (chef sneaks some chopped dill pickle in there). She had the midshipmen (she is a vegetarian which they have lots of good choices) and hasn't stopped talking about her food. We never do dessert but had to try the fresh pie after what we just experienced and let me just say they rolled us to the car. Will be back!!!!! Oh and the building itself is an absolute gem. 1850s like mansion. Perfect date place.

Maybe it was my colleague's charming story of killing a spider with a hatchet but this is a solid five star restaurant in an awesome victorian building. I learned about the restaurant on Yelp! They had me at Asparagus Sandwich! :-) Decor - the restaurant is housed in a beautiful Victorian building. Hardwood floors abound and everything here screams charm and distinction. Food - AWESOME! I had a great meal. I started with Thai Corn Fritters. With a Red Curry sauce, they were a refreshing play on a classic comfort food. The highlight was the Asparagus Sandwich. On Pumpernickel, the cream cheese and red peppers pulled the excellent flavor of the Asparagus right out! The Asparagus was intentionally cold and refreshing. The 3 cheese Polenta added a warm component to a great meal. Service - Overall excellent service. They were efficient and well informed on the menu. My colleague bought coasters and the waitress seemes concerned that they would be paid for. If she knew my colleague it would have been a valid concern but she didn't so it shouldn't have been an issue. Right, Robin G? Overall, great experience and highly recommended!

Went in to the site for a salad. I have never felt more cold stares and unwelcomness from servers anywhere else and I eat out often. I felt like they did not want me there and I felt very insulted. Will not be returning. By the way this business was a funeral he for many years before it became this business.

Stopped for the architecture and really enjoyed the food. Have the chicken dumpling soup, the Caesar salad and the apple pie. Service is great too!

I came here for a night out with friends and thoroughly enjoyed the evening. The menu is a nice break from your standard eatery and everyone in our party really enjoyed the food. I myself had the duck breast done medium with a cherry glaze and goat cheese mashed potatoes. I can honestly say that I absolutely loved it. I will most definitely be back for the duck alone, but look forward to trying the other menu items.

Cute old building that has been transformed into a little restaurant. They kept all of the original hardwood floors. We only ordered appetizers while we were there. Scallops: Excellently seared with great flavors. A little too much "juice" on the plate. The arugula should be fresh but instead was a bit of a soppy mess due to all of the juice/sauce on the plate. Thai Corn Fritters: Very innovative. Who would have thought to add curry paste and sweet chili sauce to corn fritters? The Fritters were delicious on their own but the sweet chili sauce really elevated the flavors a notch. Hummus Platter: Very general spread. Comes with pita bread, cucumbers, olives, and cherry tomatoes. There were 3 different varieties of hummus on the plate. A very generous serving.

I can't believe that after all these years, I had never been to The Crane & Pelican Cafe. I think I'm going to have to come back here every time I go back home to Iowa! When we were walking to get here, I kept thinking my mom was lost (we were in a neighborhood) - nope! This restaurant is inside of an old home that looks over the Mississippi River. It is very quaint and quiet - we came here for lunch but I would love to come back for dinner. The front room has a gorgeous chandelier and fireplace. The menu is amazing - I want to try EVERYTHING. All items are reasonably priced, fresh, and veggie lovers will be very pleased. We ordered an appetizer of the stuffed dates (they come warm - 6 of them on a plate), and my mom ordered the portabella sandwich, my sister ordered the asparagus sandwich, and I ordered the chicken salad sandwich. Everything was to die for (of course I tried their sandwiches too). The chicken salad has bacon in it (duh, because it's amazing), and is served on a croissant. All of the sandwiches came with a side, so we ordered the slaw and mushroom risotto. You can't go wrong here, no matter what you order. They have a variety and there is something for everyone. The service is great - we were never left hanging, and the food came out fast. This is hands down one of my favorite restaurants in the area now!

Stopped here for lunch today. I had the tenderloin sandwich with smashed horseradish potatoes and my wife had the chicken salad sandwich. Delicious! Their ice tea was good too (something others just don't know how to make well). Great view of the river from here as well.

This is one of my favorite lunch spots in the area. Great ambiance in a charming large old home with excellent food and drinks. Plus they've got the best Mojito I've had just about anywhere- ever- and I've had them all over the US and in a few other countries. I love the pumpkin and sausage soup and the lobster mac, but their burger or a pita and the polenta are my go-to. They even make their own limoncello in-house! They are always friendly and knowledgeable about what they offer and the river view and fireplaces make it lovely and home-y too.

Was suggested to me as a nice place to go. We got there at about 4 ish on a Saturday. Not many people there. We waited at the front as the sign says, we waited at the front , we waited at the front.... someone finally came. We were seated with a "river view". The windows looked dirty. The restroom tall garbage can overflowing. Menu interesting. We ordered. I asked for Chefs burger medium well. It came red inside. At no time did anyone ask how the food was. I was going to let them know. Server never came back to see if we were okay. All in all I would not suggest coming back.

Honestly, I was disappointed based on the high reviews here. We arrived and were seated only to be ignored for long enough that we thought about leaving. Finally someone acknowledged us and brought waters and took a drink order. We put in our food order soon after - the asparagus sandwich and the meatloaf sandwich, and also an order of the corn fritters for a shared appetizer. I've included pictures of the meatloaf and fritters. So, those fritters... well, the best I can say is that the chili dipping sauce is good, and you'll need it. The fritters are incredibly bland, and the corn is clearly canned. That's unacceptable for a corn dish in Iowa! The meatloaf sandwich was absolutely huge, but quantity counts for much less than quality. I just never could find a lot of flavor in it. Blah. The upside - the restaurant is in an historic old home, and if you're lucky you can snag a table in the room overlooking the Mississippi. Very pretty.

We love this beautiful little place looking down over the Mississippi. Super nice wait staff, cozy, quaint atmosphere in grand old mansion. Crab dip is to die but sadly we were told last night to make way for a winter menu:( My husband loves the goat cheese mashed potatoes and I can't get enough of the cheesy risotto. Meatloaf sandwiches are fabulous - try the Lone Star one (they have 3) - BBQ sauce, bacon, and pickle! Yum! Southwestern salad is spicy good! And the pasta are scrumptious! Highly recommend!

By the time you add chocolate milk and a small dessert, the kids' meal is $20. He didn't like the mac and cheese. Drinks and desserts are extra at this former funeral home, which was owned by my brother-in-law. My salmon salad consisted of only lettuce and salmon, with a sprinkle of cheese. That was all. A 20% tip was added on the bill automatically. No one at my table wants to go back.

This was such a great little find! My fiancé live in Chicago suburbs and we're traveling through the area visiting family. From the moment we walked in, the experience was enchanting, lovely decor and kind service. We had the stuffed dates which were the perfect size for an appetizer. I had a bowl of chicken and dumplings (best I've ever had) and he had the croque sabina with horseradish smashed potatoes. Both were decadent and satisfying. We finished off with a warm piece of cherry pie, so delicious. The service, food, and prices were great. This will certainly be our go to whenever we're out this way. Great spot.

It's unfortunate that your filter computer thot our review last August was fake because it wasn't. The food and service was great. The broccoli was tasty wish I knew how to do that at home. We were there after lunch time when it was quiet, after visiting the Picker store which is a stones throw away.

We reserved their front room for my parents' surprise 70th birthday party. I was organizing the event from home in Chicago, so I needed all the help I could get to pull things off, and they came through for us. A co-owner was my sole contact. She helped us plan, she made sure we got everything we needed, just the tops in friendly, professional service in the style of a small town business owner. The kind you want to root for. The space is gorgeous. Former rooming house (if I remember right), then funeral home, now restored to warm antique grace. Decorated by not kitschy. Somebody has an eye. I thought the food was nothing special, but don't take me too seriously on that. It was an abbreviated menu for the party and I'm a big-city spoiled foodie. Guests seemed to like it better. An old friend said his open-faced roast beef sandwich was the best he'd ever had. Nobody complained. Bottom line, my folks had some of the best smiles I've seen on them in a long time. New friends and old, family we don't see much, everybody had a good time and I got lots of compliments for organizing such a great party. Credit goes to the house.

Wow!! Old house turned restaurant, with a bar. I had the Beer blonde soup ..Very tasty. And a chicken salad sandwich on a croissant. .lots of chicken chunks & grapes. Hubby had the meatloaf sandwich with the River Bend topping. He enjoyed it. Fresh brewed iced tea. . Great view of the river.

The atmosphere is super awesome-- it's in an old landmark house which is super awesome. The menu was super creative and everything looked delicious. I had a burger which was great. The only thing is it was a little over cooked, but that happens with any place. The food itself was tasty, especially the Thai corn fritters which was amazing. Awesome place!

Every time I go back to the Quad Cities, I make a point to stop here for lunch or dinner. First of all, if you appreciate the history of Le Claire, you will be blown away be the house that holds this little gem. It's a former boat captain's house from the late 1800's (i think), and still has all of the original charm, including the chandeleirs and fireplace! I read a review "knocking" the decor... she must not be a fan of antiques. The view is breath-taking to boot. It's so fun to see the boats out on the river, and the hustle and bustle of Cody St. Moving on. The food is so thoughtfully designed, and introduces unique and amazing flavors to even the most picky of palettes. The menu offers everything from a fabulous asparagus sandwich, to lobster mac and cheese (which makes me salivate everytime I think about it!) And they even offer meatloaf, which Sis tried and was raving about! They make seasonal cocktails which are so fun to try, and they are also fantastic! The staff is wonderful and is so accommodating. I truly appreciate the thoughtfulness put into the entirety of this business. I look forward to going back when I'm in the QC over Christmas break!

A really good lunch at a fair price. Both of us had their meatloaf sandwich which is a specialty. The meatloaf does not disappoint and it was almost more than I could eat. My wife did take some of her's back to eat later. The old home was beautiful and the service was good. The place was rather noisy with the large numbers of people eating there.

Arrived late, about 30 minutes before they closed, but they were very delighted for us to be here. Everything was excellent, but would highly recommend the corn fritters, meat loaf sandwich, asparagus sandwich, mushroom risotto, and apple pie. Very casual but elegant atmosphere and staff was very attentive. Very charming old mansion with views of Mississippi river.

This one is more complicated than other recent reviews of mine. First, the restaurant is in LaClaire, Iowa, which is just west of the Mississippi River in Iowa. LaClaire is a cute town. Lots of art store and other cute shops. For as small a town as it is, there are quite a few restaurants. When we first got there, we were not sure where to go. So, we stepped into the local coffee shop. The shop (the name escapes me) is run by a great old guy. He moved there from Chicago via Wyoming and spent much of his life in art restoration. He has stories about everyone and everything and was just fun to talk to. When we asked where we should go, he recommended the Crane and Pelican Cafe. It was a short walk up a hill from the coffee shop, so we walked. The restaurant is in an old home, one of several "River Pilot Homes" around the town. These are historic landmarks, I presume that were once owned by pilots of river boats. (Logical?) The home was beautiful - well restored. They set up tables in various rooms on the first floor. There is a nice bar, which we did not partake of. I understand there is a gift shop on the second floor, but we chose not to check it out. The service was excellent, but the food was only fair. Our waitress was attentive, helpful. Noting the prices were a little high, we opted for hamburgers. We were told that these were sourced from a local farm, so I sort of imagined the cow was still mooing the day before. But, unfortunately, the meat was not so great. I'm sure it was healthy, but just not well flavored. They serve a choice of sides - we both picked kettle chips. I assumed they were home made and they may have been. They were kind of blah though. Prices were much higher than we thought. Two hamburgers, 2 chips and two soft drinks, plus tip - about $40. For the great service, I'm giving it three stars. I'll also give it good marks for the views of the Mississippi River. But, if the hamburgers and chips were representative of the other things on their menu, I was not very impressed. Perhaps if we had not been so cheap and ordered a real meal...

The group I was with when I went here really loved the building and setting, very pretty. The salmon was delicious, and the cocktails we had were also very good. The main drawback I had was that the prices seemed to be a little high for what you got. A little more variety would help, too. I would go again.

Not a river view, quaint atmosphere. Great service. Good food. We had the filet of beef, seafood pasta, portobello sandwich and burger. All gluten free items. Also the crab dip was great. Total bill $84

A delightful lunch on a delightful summer day! Service was excellent! Food was very good. I recommend the Asparagus sandwich with the summer slaw! It was surprisingly light and filling. Expect to spend more here as prices are higher than most at lunchtime. End result: Quaint local establishment that highlights a quaint river town! I'll be back again!

Eh. No. Just no. We went here because it was close to one of our stops on a road trip, and because I looked it up and it offered a vegan burger. The only good thing I actually have to say is that we had a large party (12 people) and they seated us quickly. The house is okay, but decorations could use some more updating. The tables were cheap with plastic tops. My husband and I both ordered the vegan burger, and my father in law ordered a small garden salad. I ordered a mac and cheese for my daughter. The vegan burger is not house made. I wasn't sure if it was advertised as such, but a friend of mine used to work for Cisco and sold these frozen pieces of cardboard. It came on a slightly stale bun with a small squirt of some red sauce stuff. I wish I would have taken a picture. The appearance was pretty bad, and I only ate half of it. My father-in-law's salad was so-so. Incredibly small and the vegetables were definitely not fresh. If the burgers had been $6 and the salad had been $4, I would have said okay. But the food was incredibly overpriced for what we were offered. It was more what I would expect if I were at Disney in one of their standing room only restaurants.

I don't usually review places, but this was a great find. I was in Quad Cities on a work trip from NYC. Stopped in here for a bite to eat for lunch. The restaurant was just renovated and was very well done. Beautiful view of the river and great service. Really enjoyed the asparagus sandwich and I might add the aioli on it was amazing. My coworker ordered a chicken sandwich and said it was one of the best he had and the chicken was very moist. I would say this place is on par with my favorite eateries in NYC. Should my travels find their way to Quad Cities in the future, I would definitely stop in again.

The resturant itself is really cool. Great atmosphere and friendly service. I had the heart and sole, and it was pretty good but overall not really remarkable. The portion size was pretty small for the price and the rice was a little cold. The vegetable they were serving was corn on the cob. It too was slightly cold and considering it was in season, pretty bad. Overall, a decent place and if you order the right thing, you will probably be pretty satisfied. I had high hopes that weren't really met.

Stopped here for lunch today. I had the tenderloin sandwich with smashed horseradish potatoes and my wife had the chicken salad sandwich. Delicious! Their ice tea was good too (something others just don't know how to make well). Great view of the river from here as well.

I will not pontificate on the beauty of the location of this restaurant (which is awesome). I do wish to extend my congratulations to the staff. It has been a long time since I have been surprised at the quality of the food I was served. We started off with the stuffed dates. I liked them, but my company loved them. For dinner we got the lobster mac n cheese with the gluten free noodle option, and the meatloaf dinner. Gluten free crap, 9 out of 10 times... taste like crap (yah I said it). The dish had large hunks of lobster, and was the best man n cheese dish I have ever had. My dish was the meatloaf dinner though. Ok, meatloaf. I thought, well you have it on the menu, and this is supposed to be a good place to eat. Kind of like going to a steak house, and seeing a hot dog on the menu. It was nothing like any meatloaf I have had before. I am not sure how they get it so fluffy and light, but it still taste like meatloaf. The mash potatoes and gravy were also excellent. It took a lot of self-control not to just mash it all together, and eat it like Ralphy's younger brother in "A Christmas Story", and eat with no utensils. To finish the evening, we both had a nice cup of Irish coffee. That's with Jameson (or insert your favorite whiskey). Not Baileys you wuss.

We had lunch here and we were really happy with everything. The food was yummy and hot things were hot, the service was polite and quick, the dessert portion was huge. We would eat here again and would recommend you do the same. Entrée's order were the Asparagus Sandwich, Open Faced Pot Roast Sandwich with Gravy and Mashed Potatoes, and the Grilled Chicken Breast with Risotto. Dessert course, Homemade Almond Joy Ice Cream.

A quaint little restaurant where you're served in the rooms of an 1800 era house. Very nicely decorated, it was a quiet place where we enjoyed a light lunch. I had just the house salad and my husband had the Chef's Burger, which he said was pretty good. A bit pricey, but food was worth it. At first, I kind of felt like we didn't fit in, might be a little too classy for us, coming in wearing blue jeans and tennis shoes. But then I realized that the hostess was wearing blue jeans too :)

This restaurant is highly overrated. While the ambiance is OK - old house on a hilltop overlooking the Mississippi - the food and service are mediocre at best. The date appetizer consists of five small dates filled with a mushy substance - nothing like the description which mentioned cranberries and nuts. The meatloaf sandwiches are large but very poor quality - mostly filler with very little meat. The side of mashed potatoes was tasteless and barely warm. The side of coleslaw was OK. The soup of the day was proscuitto and chickpea. The broth was tasty but the meat, while plentiful, was so tough and chewy that it was not edible. One person in our group of four had the chicken and dumpling soup which she liked. And, on top of the food being disappointing it took FOREVER to get it - about a half hour. No apologies so assume it is always slow. My niece said she had eaten there a couple of years ago and had the same experience. Also, someone working at a store in town asked where we had eaten lunch and grimaced when I told her. I would not return to this restaurant and do not recommend it.

I want so much to love this place. In a cute old town, you'd expect a cute old restaurant to deliver, but this just doesn't. I have been here twice with my husband, and each time we've both felt a little disappointed. I am vegetarian and appreciate their vegetarian and vegan choices (the spaghetti, vegan burger, veggie sandwich, and salads) but the taste is just not there. My husband has ordered the meat loaf as well as a chicken salad, and I could make better at home. The corn in the corn fritters was definitely canned, the lettuce in the salad seemed like it came out of a bag - some was browning and wilted. Lack of seasoning and freshness abounds, and the service is slow and forgetful. I think the Crane & Pelican would do well to decrease the size of their menu in order to concentrate on making less items with better quality and taste. Again, I really want to love this place and as I'm now a local in Le Claire, I hope they make some improvements.

This is my favorite restaurant in the entire Quad Cities. I LOVE the ambiance and the service is good. Was bad once and the owner more than made up for any issues. The food is AMAZING! The wine selection is superb! It is kid friendly. I couldn't ask for more from a restaurant.

Went there yesterday w/ a friend. no waiting for lunch , we just sat down. She had t he asparagus sandwich , it was very good, I had a cob salad it was very good as well, the man waiting on us was better than average, a quaint old house with some real stories to tell, I would bet. I am betting that we will return for more really good food, soon when we are in the area. I kinda want to take a ouji board along to see if we can see who is about :) the waiter says that he gets the willy's on a regular basis, especially at night , "stuff" goes on , he said. If you are sensitive to the afterlife goings on , definitely stop by and give it a feel. oh and very good lemonade

My wife and I recently went to Le Claire to finally check it out. The area is pretty nice and will definitely head back when the weather is warmer to walk around. The Crane & Pelican is located on one of the town's side streets in a beautiful historic house. The setting is great, though a little confusing at first when it comes to a cafe. We had read the reviews online and checked out the menu and went dressed casual...but as we walked up we were a little confused as if it was going to be a more formal atmosphere. Turns out we were dressed just fine, but being dressed formal there would also work. The staff was extremely friendly and attentive throughout the meal. We ordered the cranberry hummus for the table and it was pretty good. It came with an assortment of vegetables and a good portion of the hummus. For dinner, she ordered the grilled shrimp salad and I had the pecan crusted salmon. She said she really like her salad...can't go much beyond that since I didn't try it. The salmon was good, though I was not the hugest fan of the blueberry sauce that accompanied it. The risotto was fair...having a creamy texture but some undercooked pieces. The only thing I did not like on the plate was the broccoli which was drenched in butter. Dinner was good all around otherwise. For dessert we shared apple pie with some of their homemade ice cream. I have to say they hit it out of the park with dessert. The ice cream was excellent and quite obvious that it was homemade having a creamy rich flavor. The apple pie was also very good. All and all a good experience.

Here is my only problem with Crane and Pelican: as a 34 year old man, I tend to feel a wee-bit uncomfortable at Crane and Pelican only because this place is frequented by an overwhelming majority of middle aged arts and crafts antique shopper women. "That's LeClaire for you" is the common response i get when i tell people that. I swear, every time I go there I am the only male except for a staff member or two. though, i should add that i haven't tried their vegan night (which, as a former vegan i am interested in despite my reformation). maybe some foody vegan skinny dudes show up. The rest is AWESOME. It is a bit touristy (a destination restaurant in a sense) which fits the mold of "the new" Le Claire, but it is truly a unique dining option and I HIGHLY recommend it. The food is great, the theme/niche/flavor/style is perfect (upscale/fine dining CAFE?), the fact that the building was once a home and also a morgue is fascinating, and while i tend to dislike places that sell stuff that isn't consumed through the facehole, I even really liked some of the arts and crafts stuff upstairs. this is the definition of a quality local place that really understands the community that surrounds it and the people that travel to Le Claire for the modestly priced upscale small town charm and flavor (little Galena, IL). maybe i am a middle aged arts and crafts antique shopper woman deep down inside? probably not because my favorite thing is their meatloaf awesomeness and beer selection. did i mention the food is great?

Five stars for service, atmosphere and side items, but the veggie burger was tasteless. Great smoked Gouda and roast red pepper soup. Ordered a specialty vodka drink, and it came in a near shot-glass size. My bad, I suppose.

We're always excited to find places off the beaten path that have not only one but several vegetarian options. And to top it off, the restaurant is in a beautiful old mansion overlooking the Mississippi. It feels regal to eat there. We had the stuffed dates (because of one of these yelp reviews), asparagus sandwich & grilled veggie pita. The dates & pita were wonderful. The asparagus sandwich was unique, but probably not something we'd order again. We were so impressed with the quality and options, we planned our trip back to Chicago so that we would pass by Le Claire at dinnertime so we could stop by again and try their dinner/desserts. We were so disappointed they were closed on Sunday! :( But that's our fault for not calling ahead. We'll definitely try again next time we pass through!

What a great place to dine, even in the winter! The restaurant is located in a renovated old house that sits up on the hill. Atmosphere is really neat because they kept much of the original decor in the house. Staff is polite and friendly. The food was amazing. The seasoning on the pork chop I had was really unique and it added a ton of flavor. My wife had the steak filet and she said numerous times that she would rate it as one of the best steaks she's ever had.

I have eaten here three times. Ingredients are seasonal and local-- the menu changes from visit-to-visit. Asparagus is a must-have and has a lightly smoked flavor while retaining a nice texture. The Duck with Cranberry glaze and couscous was amazing and the duck melts in your mouth and couples to the al dente texture of the risotto for a nice touch. Each visit has been faultless. It's run from an old home (?) from the 1800's with oversized woodwork, high ceilings, a large ornate fireplace, wood floors, and large window-side seating that overlooks the river in the distance or the quaintess of a Le Claire hillside. Worth a trip out to Le Claire.

I was out of town interviewing for a position with a local company and the gentleman interviewing me took me, my wife and another man from out of town out to dinner at the restaurant. The second I walked through the door the feeling that was hit was charm and uniqueness. With the era of box style restaurants and cookie cutters, this was a place that was beautifully restored and in wonderful condition. The staff was kind and helpful and they even had a sense of humor. The place was quiet and a perfect place to carry on a conversation. The food took a bit to come out but that was ok because it was a sit down dinner and we were not in a rush. The food was incredible for me and the others at the table agreed. My wife is pregnant so she is ultra picky with her tastes and she commented that the food was incredible. We ordered dessert and once again it tasted great. I ordered carrot cake and I am very particular about carrot cake because you can easily screw it up. They nailed it!!! Do not go if you are looking for large portions, the food was delicious, the prices were affordable and the portions were medium size.

The set up of this place is unlike any restaurant i had ever seen. It used to be someone's home way back when. We started off with stuffed dates. They were stuffed with cranberries and chevre cheese. Really tasty, way overpriced. $5 for 6 of them! My gf and I both thought this place was very good. I had the Iowa chop. It's a lightly breaded pork chop with a rosemary butter sauce. At first it was pretty decent, then each ensuing bite became more and more ridiculous. It came with a green bean and carrot side and horseradish mashed potatoes. It could have used a lot more horseradish but that's just my needy tastebuds. However, the carrots, carrots, right? They were so good I had to force my gf to try them. I'm not big on cooked carrots but they were delicious. My gf had the pesto pasta. i thought it was pretty good but it was a bit on the oily side. For dessert we had the orange crepes. Again, overpriced but they were soooooo good. A great way to end our meal. Overall a good experience. A bit pricey, but very good food overlooking the river.

my fiance and I went here for a early dinner this week, as recommended by a few locals. they said here or faithful pilot, but if you want to leave full and happy go here. so we did. we sat at the bar and got some drinks and ordered food: chicken/dumpling soup was as good as the staff raved it was. very good soup we had the lobster mac and cheese which was awesome as well. could have had a little more lobster but what dish can't. very flavorful and a good portion. wifey had the duck dish. with blueberry re''duck''sion. this was a very flavorful dish and a different take on duck. for dessert we couldn't decide at all.. staff said we wouldn't regret getting the crepes, and we don't. they were the best crepes we have ever had. overall we had an awesome meal and left very pleased, $80 with tip out the door for a great meal is good anyday in my life! thanks again.

The meatloaf & meatloaf sandwiches are awesome! The mashed potatoes are good with the gravy from the meatloaf meal, but on their own are a little too strongly flavored. My husband had lobster mac n cheese & liked it. You have to get the carrot cake! Huge & wonderful! good drink selection. A little pricey. Kind of a quiet spot, nice for dates but I don't know how comfortable I'd be with a group of friends having drinks & a good time. The dinner crowd was older when my husband & I went. We've had it for takeout also. We made reservations for dinner our first time & when we arrived no one was around to seat us, we waited a bit & finally sat ourselves, it was a little uncomfortable not knowing what was going on.

Finding good vegetarian options while on the road can be quite challenging, but thanks to Yelp this little gem filled the bill perfectly. In a beautiful old house with great views of the Mississippi, this restaurant offered options for vegetarians (and non) that were truly delicious. Try the smoked Gouda soup, worth the drive in and of itself.

I was back in the midwest visiting some family and some of the girls took a day trip up to Le Claire. This little restaurant is situated in an adorable victorian house. They have a varied menu, and even had a menu dedicated to vegans and vegetarians. Because tomatoes were in season I elected to have the Caprese salad, which was divine. The heirloom tomatoes were so juicy and flavorful. For desert someone ordered the sweet corn ice cream. Being in Iowa where corn is so abundant and great, I knew that I just had to try some. It was paired with cinnamon and lime and it was really good. If I am ever in the area again I will definitely go back.

Historic house, now a small friendly restaruant, overlooking the Mississippi. Great beef wellington. Beef is local. Even had the local cabernet, Felony Red; for an Iowa winery it's worth a try. Not a Napa cab, but tasty just the same. Blueberry pie was OK, but the homemade ice cream that went with it was very good. Owner/wait staff was very busy, but food served appropriately.

We had an enjoyable dinner and experience, good service, I had the chop and although it was a little dry the flavor was very good. The mixed vegetables were nicely done and the potatoes very good. The other people with us enjoyed their meals as well, although the bread was rather sparse and when we asked for more they only brought two slices for four of us. I have not been to lunch here or tried their desserts, my wife says lunch and desserts are very good.

I took my parents here for their anniversary dinner in April and it was an ok experience. It was pretty empty and it still took a long time for our meals. They put cloves in the meatloaf and my Dad and another party I overheard was not impressed. I had the wild mushroom ravioli and I thought it was good. But my Dad had spoiled beer from the tap, my Mom had her order wrong, and all in all it was an ok visit, but not good enough for them to return. This weekend I decided to try it again because my friend said they claim to offer a gluten free menu. When we asked what was gluten free on the menu, the waitress had no idea nor did she offer to ask the chef. She guessed one salad on there was so she ordered that. I just ordered a chicken sandwich and the other two ordered hummus with fresh veggies. It took well over 25 minutes for our food and there were only two tables of people in there! When my sandwich arrived my friend noticed first it was pink, I opened up my sandwich and the chicken breast was not only undercooked but obviously raw! I then had to wait another 15 minutes to receive my order. Although the waitress id bring out a bowl of soup for me, it was completely unacceptable for a "chef" at a higher end restaurant to not notice that the chicken was undercooked when it was plated when my friend caught it as it was passed to me. I tried it twice and I think Steventon's and the Faithful Pilot are better and safer choices to eat at.

A really good lunch at a fair price. Both of us had their meatloaf sandwich which is a specialty. The meatloaf does not disappoint and it was almost more than I could eat.
